Interim Accounting sends updates to ClearPass every few minutes regarding how much data a client has used. While useful for billing, it generates significant traffic and CPU load in large environments. By using only Start/Stop messages, ClearPass still knows exactly when a user connects and disconnects (which is sufficient for managing session-based licenses), but the system avoids the overhead of constant updates, leading to more efficient resource usage.

ClearPass Policy Manager allows administrators to create and enforce policies regarding user and device access to the network.

Enabling automatic endpoint reconciliation ensures that ClearPass updates endpoint attributes dynamically as new information is gathered. This prevents repeated disconnections and redundant enforcement decisions by allowing ClearPass to adapt to the latest endpoint context without reapplying identical policies unnecessarily.

Using Active Directory for both authentication and authorization allows ClearPass to validate user credentials and simultaneously retrieve directory attributes such as group membership. This enables consistent, attribute-based policy decisions without requiring a separate identity source.
